ABOUT ME
Hello! My name is Selma Smith Kvalvaag, and I am a senior at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, majoring in Sustainable Urban Environments with minors in Integrated Design and Media and Urban Policy and Management. As a Global Leader and Scholar in STEM (GLASS) Honors student, my academic journey is driven by a deep passion for urban planning, sustainability, and urban regeneration. I am committed to applying my knowledge and skills to design cities and transportation systems that are inclusive, resilient, and beneficial to all.
Having lived and traveled in Norway, South Africa, and Canada, I consider myself a global citizen with a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. This background has shaped how I approach urban environments, enabling me to incorporate diverse perspectives into my work. My time at an international boarding school further strengthened my understanding of cross-cultural collaboration and the importance of engaging communities in the planning and design process.
I’ve had the privilege of working on several projects during my study abroad in Milan, where I focused on creating sustainable environments and gained hands-on experience in project management. These opportunities, along with my capstone project on urban street canyons, have honed my technical expertise while reinforcing my dedication to reimagining how cities can better serve their residents.
In addition to academics, I serve as a GLASS peer ambassador, where I enjoy connecting with new people, hosting events, and fostering a welcoming environment for scholars and exchange students. Beyond my studies, I am a passionate skier and dancer, and I find creative expression through sewing, drawing, and collage-making—outlets that keep my curiosity and creativity alive.
